This is the headquarters of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, one of the autocephalous churches that make up the Eastern Orthodox Church. The complex, centered around the Church of St. George, serves as the spiritual and administrative heart for Orthodox Christians worldwide, with a history deeply intertwined with that of Istanbul itself.
Visiting offers a quiet contrast to the city's major mosques. You'll see the modest but significant church, the Patriarchal throne, and relics like the Column of Flagellation. The atmosphere here is one of quiet reverence, a living piece of the city's Byzantine and multi-faith past tucked away in a residential area.
The main gate on Sadrazam Ali Paşa Caddesi is often closed; use the smaller side entrance further down the street, near the iron fence.
The main church and courtyard are accessible, but there are several steps at various points within the complex.
